Alnwick Castle

Alnwick Castle is a grand castle based in Northumberland. It has over 1000 years of history to explore, and is still home to the Percy family (who have occupied the castle for more than 700 years), making it the second largest occupied castle after Windsor. It is a popular tourist spot, attracting hundreds and thousands of visitors each year. Alnwick Castle offers plenty of things to see and do; from touring the stately rooms and exploring the castle’s museums to more lively activities such as archery and broomstick training.

Food and drink is offered at two locations on site; the Courtyard Café and Pizza & Ice Cream Parlor. These offer a selection of locally sourced hot and cold food. Plant based options are available.

The history of Alnwick Castle

Alnwick Castle has a long history, dating all the way back to 1096. It was initially constructed to guard the River Aln crossing, and by the mid 12th century had developed mostly into the castle we see today. It has been home to the Percy family since 1309, when Henry Percy purchased the then typical Norman style castle. Throughout its vast history, it has endured its fair share of battles and sieges. It was notably besieged numerous times by William the Conqueror during the War of the Roses.

It has notably become a hot spot for Harry Potter fans, having being featured in the first two films. Alnwick has also been featured in shows such as Downton Abbey and Blackadder, and in blockbusters such as Transformers: The Last Knight. The castle offers guided location tours to point out some of these locations.
