Café 1909 was started in October of 2025 by married couple Kieran and Michelle Hughes. Inspired by Eastern European coffee houses, Café 1909 brings a fancier vibe to Front Street, Stanhope, replacing a previous Barclays building. The café is working with other local shops, helping the independent businesses in the area. They accept credit cards if you don’t feel like carrying around cash, and have a large variety of foods and beverages to choose from.
They mainly make brunch and dessert, and while primarily dealing with dine-in, takeaway is also an option for those that prefer it. Their menu covers small bites, main courses, sides, desserts and drinks.
Almost everything you can buy at Café 1909 is between £1 – £10, the only exception on the menu being the ham, chicken and leek pie or steak and Guinness, being priced at £12.95. While generally inexpensive, the menu falls neatly in line with the extravagant theming of the café itself, with main courses such as black forest waffles and croque monsieur.
The café 1909 boasts a wheelchair-accessible entrance, as well as wheelchair-accessible seating and bathroom. There is also seating space outside if needed. They have self-described themselves as LGBTQ+ friendly and as a transgender safe space. Wi-fi is available for public use within the cafe as well. There are no designated car parks, but there is usually space for parking on the road, directly outside of the cafe.
