Situated along the Yorkshire coast, Cayton Bay is a sandy beach which sits between the coastal towns of Scarborough and Filey.
Large swathes of golden sand are circled by dramatic cliffs and sparkling sea water. Making this remote beach a wonderful spot to unwind. With unspoilt picturesque views, be sure to pack a picnic and charge your cameras!
Home to one of the oldest surf schools in the UK, Cayton Bay has wonderful waters for you to paddle in. It is a popular spot to learn surfing and kayaking too. However, the current can be quite strong, so do not stray too far from the beach. If water sports aren’t your thing, Cayton has much else to offer, from birdwatching and coastal strolls to fossil hunting. Indeed, the cliffs date back 150 million years!
Please note, the path down to the beach by Knipe Point is rather steep. So those with mobility issues, as well as wheelchair and pushchair users, may find the journey both up and down very difficult. The walk is flat in places and takes you through a lovely wooded area, though you will encounter several steps toward the end.
You can find similarly pleasant and private beaches throughout Yorkshire. Why not add the charming (and lesser known) beaches of Hayburn Wyke or Filey to your itinerary? The Yorkshire Coast has much to offer. The walk to Filey is about 5 miles long meanwhile Hayburn Wyke is best reached by a 30 minute car journey. Or head toward Scarborough South Bay 3.5 miles away for the quintessential seaside experience.
Dogs are permitted at Cayton Bay all year round. So you don't have to leave any family behind!
You can park for free along the remains of the old road at Cayton Bay. There is also a car park closer to the beach near the surf shop, though here you will have to buy a ticket.
There are numerous surf shops near the beach as well as toilets and cafés.
