History

Firstly, Diggerland is a one-of-a-kind adventure park where visitors can safely ride, drive, and operate real construction machinery. The first Diggerland park opened in Kent in April 2000 and quickly became a hit. It attracted more than 20,000 visitors in its opening year. The success of this site led to the launch of Diggerland Durham in March 2001 and Diggerland Devon just two months later.

The Yorkshire park, located on a 70-acre site in Castleford, officially opened at Easter in 2007. Its scale and variety quickly made it a favourite among families in the North of England. Over time, the Diggerland brand has also expanded internationally, with Diggerland USA opening in 2014, marking a major milestone for the organisation.

Purpose

The goal of Diggerland is to create a safe and exciting family-friendly environment where people of all ages can enjoy the thrill of using real diggers, dumpers, and construction-themed rides. It combines fun with a truly unique experience that you won’t find in a traditional theme park.

Things to Do

Diggerland Yorkshire features more than 20 exciting rides and attractions, all themed around construction machinery. Highlights include:

  • Spindizzy – a giant digger ride that spins visitors around.

  • Skyshuttle – a thrilling experience that lifts you high above the park for stunning views.

  • Groundshuttle – a bumpy ride across rough terrain.

  • Giant Diggers & Dumpers – the chance to operate real heavy machinery.

  • Go-Karts – a fun racing challenge for families.

  • Dig-a-Round – a unique construction take on the traditional carousel.

Families can also enjoy themed games such as Dippy Ducks (hooking ducks using diggers) and Skittles (knocking down giant skittles with machinery).

Accessibility

Above all, Diggerland Yorkshire is committed to being as accessible as possible. Pathways are made of concrete, tarmac, or gravel, allowing wheelchair and mobility buggy users to navigate the site. Designated disabled parking bays are available for Blue Badge holders, and only registered guide dogs or assistance dogs are permitted on-site.

The park can be reached by public transport, with bus routes 140 and 189 passing nearby, and Northern Rail providing access via Castleford station.
