Right in the heart of Newcastle, Jesmond Dene is a park that is a popular spot for picnics, dog walks and family days out within woodlands and wildlife.Â
Take the paths along the river, cross the bridges and find the Dene’s well-known waterfall. Along the way you’ll also run into some ruins and old buildings, one of which will be the 14th century water mill located right next to the waterfall. You’ll also be able to view Jesmond Dene’s banqueting hall. The Friends of Jesmond Dene have put together 2 route maps to follow.Â
Located right next to the visitor center, Pets Corner hosts a plethora of animals! There’s also a play park for under 8’s right next to Pet’s Corner, as well as picnic benches.Â
Next to the Visitor Centre, the Cafe does a variety of hot and cold meals, snacks and drinks.
You can board the Thomas Train from the picnic table and play area if it is available to tour Jesmond Dene Thomas style. There’s no need to book, although there is a small charge of a couple of pounds.
The play park isn’t the only place to picnic in Jesmond Dene. Located next to the waterfall, the picnic field provides a large space for picnics and sports.Â
