History

The construction on Matfen Hall began in 1832, on the site of the manor of west Matfen. A successful architect named Sir Edward Blackett soon grew frustrated with Thomas Rickman who was a renowned architect that Sir Edward Blackett commissioned to design and build the estate. He fired Rickman, before continuing to have the hall built in accordance with his original designs. Sir Edward successfully designed Holy Trinity Church in Maften, this was part of the construction of Maften Hall. Completed in 1836. Maften Hall boasted a carved doorway, surmounted by the Blackett coat of arms and a gothic style entrance that opened up into the Great Hall and these features still exist today.
