What are the Old Durham Gardens?
The Old Durham Gardens is a space containing gardens, animals and beautiful picnic locations. Established over 350 years ago with many historic views, there are several ways you can access the gardens through different walkways along the river.
Five main locations make up the gardens; the restored orchard, the lower gardens, the terraces, a gazebo and the walled gardens. As the garden is located right next to the Old Durham Farm, visitors can meet the resident pigs, llamas, horses and other animals.
Entry is free, however the Old Durham Gardens do accept donations.
The lower walled garden and orchards are always open. On the other hand, the upper walled garden and gazebo are only open 2 pm-4 pm on Thursdays and Sundays from April to September. You can also join Friends of Old Durham Gardens, a volunteering group that maintains the gardens. More information about the gardens and the work that the group do can be found here.
?What is the accessibility like
The terrain in Old Durham Gardens is uneven, with often muddy pathways. There is limited car parking within the gardens, however they are a medium walk along the river. Following the River Wear or passing through the University Sports Fields will lead you to the gardens. There is a ‘full access’ compost toilet on site.

There are! We are unsure how accessible they are, they are described on line as 'full access'.
There is disabled parking however the grounds themselves are limited access (steps up and down terraces in the gardens, mixed terrain, that kind of thing).
