Accessibility

Location

The gym is in Tindale Crossing near St Helen’s in Bishop Auckland. It is just a short drive from the town centre of Bishop Auckland and the retail park at Tindale. It is right next door to Aldi and is over the road from the park. All the housing estates around Bishop Auckland are also within walking distance, including Woodhouse and Henknowle.

Entrance

Getting into the gym requires having an app on your mobile phone where you scan a QR code to open a big turnstile. For wheelchair users, there is a separate automatic door to the right before the turnstile. Additionally, there is a buzzer that you can press if you need help from a member of staff with getting through the turnstile/door. If you are first visiting the gym and don’t have the app to scan, you can also press the buzzer to inform staff of your arrival. It is recommended that you book an appointment for an induction or meeting by contacting their email or phone number.

Wheelchair Users

As mentioned before, wheelchair users can get into the gym via an automatic door. The space around the gym accommodates for wheelchairs to manoeuvre around the place, depending on make and model. There are plenty of workouts that wheelchairs users and people with other physical disabilities can take part in. This can be discussed with members of staff, and they can advise you on what activities are suitable for the individual. The changing rooms can be accessed through a set of double doors to the right as you enter the gym, and down the wide corridor. Getting in and out of the changing rooms requires only one door to get through. There are no steps or tight corners, making it easy for wheelchair users to access.

Changing Rooms

All the changing rooms have a suitable number of lockers. Additionally, there is a bench in the middle of the room and seating around the outside along the lockers. There is plenty of space for people to sit down. The cubicles are spacious, including the toilets and showers.

Equipment

All equipment is maintained and cleaned regularly. There are up to 8 treadmills in a row in the main room, along with 8 cross-trainers. More treadmills can be located upstairs. Moreover, there are 2 rowing machines and 5 exercise bikes. The weight racks are fully equipped with dumbbells of varying weights; these are located towards the back of the extended hall. Other free weights including barbells are located around this area. Also, there is an abundant amount of resistance weight machines too; of all different kinds for many different specific muscle training exercises.

Staff will ensure all members who join are trained on how to use all the equipment. This happens during an induction session, which can be prearranged by contacting the gym.

Parking

The gym has its own car park right outside and there are plenty of spaces, but it can get quite full during busy times. You can leave your car in Aldi’s car park (for up to 2 hours) and walk across to the One Gym. Disabled car parking spaces are right next to the main entrance.

Water point at One Gym Bishop Auckland

The nearest bus stop is a short walk up the main road that passes the gym. The bus can be caught from Bishop Auckland, West Auckland and even as far as Crook and Durham.

Refreshments

There is an accessible water point with a single tap for people to refill their own water bottles. Also, there is a vending machine selling a range of drinks including water, energy drinks and juice.

Atmosphere

The gym can get a little bit noisy, with music playing around the venue. Members are also welcome to bring and wear their own headphones to listen to their own music or to muffle the background noise. The gym can also get very busy, particularly on late afternoons and early evenings as a lot of people go to the gym after work/school. This gym is also open 24 hours, so you can attend overnight when it is very quiet. However, there are no staff and therefore no classes during these hours. The place is generally well-lit (with vibrant red neon lighting), but not overly vibrant.

Conclusion
