Sandcastle Waterpark, located on South Beach in Blackpool, first opened its doors on 26 June 1986. Built on the former site of the South Shore Open Air Baths. Additionally, the park was initially operated through a private partnership. In 2009, the facility was brought under the ownership of Blackpool Council, marking a new chapter in its development. Over the years, significant investments have been made to expand and modernize the park. Notably, a £5.5 million project introduced two major new attractions, completed in two phases, with the second phase opening on schedule and within budget in 2006.
In 2016, Sandcastle Waterpark proudly celebrated its 30th anniversary, hosting a range of community events and charity activities. As part of the celebrations, the park achieved a world record for the most people to ride a single water slide within one hour—529 participants—surpassing the previous record of 396 riders held by a Dutch water park.
The primary aim of Sandcastle Waterpark is to provide family-friendly entertainment through a wide variety of water-based attractions. The park features a mix of thrill rides—such as Masterblaster, SideWinder, Aztec Falls, and Montazooma—as well as family rides, including Thunder Falls, Lagoon Bay, and Typhoon Lagoon. Visitors can also enjoy the Sea Breeze Spa for a more relaxing experience.
For guests seeking extra comfort, the Tiki Cabana offers private, bookable spaces complete with exclusive features such as reserved parking, fridges stocked with refreshments, and private hot tubs.
Sandcastle Waterpark places strong emphasis on accessibility and inclusivity. Assistance dogs are welcome, and staff are happy to care for them while guests enjoy the facilities. The venue also provides SandStormer beach wheelchairs, available free of charge with a simple chair exchange deposit system. Accessible parking spaces are available in the nearby car park, located approximately 50 metres from the main entrance.
Public transport access is convenient, with the Number 1 bus stopping directly outside the park along the promenade. For visitors travelling by train, Northern Line services offer routes to Blackpool, with journey times averaging around 97 minutes.
The park also maintains a first aid station, situated on the boardwalk near the slide entrances, and trained staff are always on hand to provide assistance. For a quieter visit, guests are advised to arrive early in the morning or during the final hour before closing, as these times tend to be less crowded.
