Situated on the Duddon Estuary in Cumbria, Sandscale Haws beach is a national nature reserve that houses many wildlife. The scenic beach offers sweeping views of the towering Lakeland Mountains.
Sandscale Haws Beach has dune grasslands which are home to the natterjack toad, a rare and protected species in the UK, and the Dune Helleborine, a rare orchid.
Sandscale Haws is a popular destination for dog walkers, but you must keep your dog close to you from March to July to prevent them from disturbing nesting birds. With dotted shallow pools in the beach, your dog should not enter them because they are vital breeding areas for natterjack toads and insects. The pools can also contain toxic blue-green algae that can make dogs very ill.
