Horse racing at Sedgefield Racecourse dates back as far as 1732, giving the venue nearly three centuries of heritage. Although little is known about its earliest meetings, by 1804 Sedgefield had begun to establish itself as an important site for equestrian sport. That same year, Ralph Lambton, an ancestor of the Earls of Durham, founded a new racing club at the Hardwick Arms, designating Sedgefield as its headquarters. Among the earliest members were Ralph Brandling, the owner of Gosforth Park, and Robert Surtees, father of Robert Smith Surtees, the well-known author of Jorrocks.
Over the years, the racecourse evolved significantly. In 1977, following the death of former chairman Harry Lane, Frank Scotto took over leadership at a time when the course was rumoured to be at risk of closure. Under his direction, extensive improvements were made — replacing old tin huts with modern bars and dining areas, and constructing the Sedgefield Pavilion in 1991. Four years later, the addition of the Theakston Suite in 1995 further enhanced the venue’s corporate and hospitality offerings, cementing Sedgefield’s place as a key destination for horse racing in the North East.
Sedgefield Racecourse is a left-handed National Hunt course, hosting a range of jump racing events throughout the year. Races typically take place once a month, attracting both local spectators and visitors from further afield.
Beyond race days, the venue also offers additional attractions:
A monthly market, held on the first Sunday of each month
On-site restaurants and bars, providing racegoers with high-quality dining options and refreshments
