Fun day out
I am disappointed that people with a disability can’t go to the very top.
The Souter Lighthouse is a National Trust protected site and provides a wide range of activities to do. Check out the website for more details. Moreover, along the coastline you can find all kinds of birds ranging from shags and cormorants to kittiwakes and guillemots. The red and white lighthouse can be climbed for views of the area.
Furthermore, the on-site cafe has both indoor and outdoor seating in varying garden levels. In addition, the outdoor eating area has winbreaks and is decorated with irises of different colours and, in one of the fenced gardens, a seat made out of an upturned boat. The food is cooked onsite. Drinks can be taken from coolers dotted along the inside wall of the café.
Furthermore, while the trail leading towards the lighthouse is rough and uneven, the lighthouse itself is actually quite flat on the way up to and into the café itself. The lighthouse has steps to climb to get to the top. Also, there are ramps up to some of the garden areas. Although staff are not specifically trained to understand the needs of autistic people and those with dementia, they are able to help in any way that they can.
The floor of the café is plain and one colour. The café does have Wi-Fi for those who need to use a hearing link. All dogs, not just guide dogs, are welcomed and bowls of water can be provided for them.
