This pub is based in Bishop Auckland, and is named after Arthur Stanley Jefferson (better known as the Laurel in Laurel and Hardy), who lived in Bishop Auckland. In addition, this pub was also built in 1893 as a cinema and variety theatre called The Playhouse. It operated as a theatre until 1929, where it became a full on cinema called The Regal. The cinema closed in 1967, and was then used as a Bingo hall and furniture store. On June 17th 1998, it became a pub that was later bought by JD Wetherspoons.
