The History of Wickers

The Wickers was established in 2018 by philanthropist Henry Smith to provide opportunities and support for young people and the wider community. Since its creation, the charity has developed into a vital resource, offering educational programmes, recreational activities, and skills-based workshops. Its mission is to empower individuals, strengthen community ties, and create pathways to personal and professional growth.

Services at the Wickers

The Wickers offers a broad range of services to meet community needs. These include targeted programmes and initiatives, volunteer engagement opportunities, collaboration with local organisations, and one-to-one mentoring and guidance. Each service is designed to encourage inclusion, learning, and long-term positive impact.

Weekly Activities at the Wickers

The charity runs a wide variety of weekly activities. The Advanced Studio Recording Session supports aspiring musicians, while the Charity Girls Club provides a safe space for young women to connect and build confidence. Sporting opportunities such as Mabley Mondays Community Football Sessions and the Basketball Club promote teamwork, fitness, and social inclusion. These activities not only create enjoyable experiences but also foster community spirit.

Employability Programmes

The Wickers also focuses on improving employability skills. Programmes include Head Start Action, Toki Marine Insight Day, and the Family Action CV Workshop, each designed to support career readiness. The Family Creative Film Workshop allows participants to explore media production, encouraging creativity alongside skill development. Together, these initiatives help individuals prepare for future opportunities.

Accessibility

Accessibility is a key part of The Wickers’ approach. The main entrance and activity spaces are step-free, allowing easy access for wheelchair users and those with limited mobility. Toilets on-site are accessible, and seating is available across the building for anyone needing rest. For participants with additional needs, staff are available to provide guidance, and activities are designed to encourage inclusive participation. The charity also adapts its programmes where possible to ensure that everyone, regardless of ability, feels welcome and supported.
