The Chocolate Story is an interactive experience and museum located in the heart of York at the top of the Shambles. It guides visitors through the history of chocolate all the way back to its roots in Central America. Then, it continues to its arrival in Europe and notably to its rich history in York from the 1700’s onwards. It will help guests to see why York is known as the ‘Chocolate City’, including the presence of well-known brands such as Nestle, Rowntrees and Terry’s.
York’s Chocolate Story is most known for its guided tours, which are available daily all year round. These explore the rich history of chocolate and its presence within York’s heritage. There will be chocolate samples along the way. Also, there is an opportunity to make your own chocolate lolly.
There are also other events available at varying time slots throughout the day, including tours and truffle rolling. Additionally, there are chocolate and gin tours and VIP chocolate masterclasses. On top of these year-round experiences, the chocolate story also holds many seasonal activities such as various Easter and Christmas events. To see what’s on currently you can head over to their What’s On page. Furthermore, the Chocolate Story offers private hire for parties and private workshops.
The experience also has a café serving a selection of drinks, including hot chocolate. Before you go, you can buy some of their homemade chocolate bars. Or, you can purchase other well-known brands in their shop.
The tour is completely wheelchair accessible, with a maximum of two per floor. It also boasts an accessible toilet, a lift to access all floors, chairs which are available in each room, tour transcripts that are available and it does permit assistance dogs.
If you wish to visit with a wheelchair or assistance dog, it is advised to arrange this prior to your visit to ensure as smooth an experience as possible.
